Trouble Sleeping? Can CBD Help

Some days, you might drink a little too much coffee. Some days, you might have a stressful day at work. And some days, you might have an exciting endeavor to get to the next day. The point is that there are many reasons we can't doze off to sleep some days. However, while losing sleep once in a while is normal, chronic sleep loss is not!

Like many, if you have trouble sleeping, you probably have looked around for alternatives and medications to solve or alleviate this problem. And because of this, many people choose to consume CBD in the hopes of finding better rest at night.

Even though we can't make a definite statement of its effectiveness, we can examine the research conducted thus far.

So, can CBD help people sleep better? Let's find out!

Research Into CBD and Sleep

It's no news that many medicinal properties have already been found with cannabidiol (CBD) products. Yet, interestingly, most of the effects seen in the studies - in terms of improving sleep quality - were a cross-effect while verifying the efficacy and safety of using CBD for other issues.

In 2019, The Permanente Journal published a large clinical study on CBD and sleep. This study addressed the benefits patients with chronic anxiety disorders or sleep disorders experienced after starting a CBD-based treatment in addition to their current one.

The final sample consisted of 72 adults, of which:

  • 47 had concerns related to their anxiety levels
  • 25 had concerns related to their sleep quality

One month after starting treatment, sleep scores improved for approximately 66% of the adults. And anxiety scores decreased in 80% of the patients. Promising results!

Not only that, but another encouraging study was published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics in 2014. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the use of CBD to treat Parkinson's disease, but the cross-effect was a decrease in the level of insomnia.

While looking at the sleep stages of the patients, there was an increase in the duration of the deepest sleep stage compared to times when CBD was not consumed. Were there more benefits? Yes! There was also a decrease in nightmares and restlessness while snoozing, resulting in longer and better sleep.

Will CBD help me sleep?

As of today, CBD shows enough therapeutic potential to be researched further. From the evidence collected so far, CBD does not appear to have any serious short-term or long-term side effects.

However, even with the low risk and promising results, it's crucial to know that all treatment must be done with medical advice – just like any other medication.

And rest assured, if any breakthrough happens, we'll make sure to keep you up-to-date with the latest research and news.
